fob's we didn't start the fire is cover, like, fine i guess if you've been desperately craving for anything set after billy joe's version, but the fact that it chronically places the usa and uk as the only countries as "newsworthy" and barely acknowledges the existence of news in asia, south america, africa and eastern europe means that it doesn't hold a candle to the original.

that, and it's not even in chronological order. like come the fuck on.

this is what hozier meant when he said that all art is political, because when you're a major rock band and write a cover song "updating major newsworthy events" and chicken out on russia's military invasion, pretend china doesn't exist, omit the myanmar coup, the protests in south america, southeast asia, france, iran, ukraine, and hong kong etc etc etc, you're making extremely political art in its omission.

an american band writing a song that mentions a netflix show but forgets to include major shifts in geopolitical power(like the fall of the ussr) is inherently a power and privilege problem

yeah some felt kinda shoehorned in like do we really need to mention twilight? Harry Potter? iron man? maybe like mentioning transphobic JK Rowling would be more relevant like boom you got the HP mention (sorta) + bring up how transphobia is alive and well our maybe something else around queer news like the popularity of drag or same sex marriage being legal in so many countries now compared to 1989 or if they wanted another more pop culture kinda thing why not the streaming era? like Netflix Spotify

The circle is complete:

1898: Morgan Robertson's novella "The Wreck of the Titan" is published.

1912: RMS Titanic hits an iceberg and sinks, in an event that almost beat-for-beat follows the plot of Robertson's novella.

2023: Oceangate's experimental submersible The Titan undergoes explosive decompression while retracing the descent of the Titanic.

NOW STOP NAMING THINGS THAT

are we all just going to pretend that the orcas aren't attacking the yachts because the fucking ocean is sweltering hot?

what happens to violent crime rates during heatwaves? i'll give you one hint. these are not unintelligent creatures. they're not completely incapable of understanding what is happening to them and where they live.

you don't have to anthropomorphize the goddamn orcas (although it's fun) to empathize with the fact that they are disrupted because of the changes to their environment and they are taking it out on something that they know for a fact contributes to their discomfort

i feel like as a global society, we are really good at just not saying things when they're obviously extremely uncomfortable. this is one of them. we are destroying the natural world and so the natural world is attempting to return the favor.
